After last year’s overall increase in resort visits, mountains throughout the US are hoping to make this winter even better. Faster lifts, more trails, and bigger lodges are being planned in hopes of better accommodating the crowds and keeping everyone happy on-snow. Here are just some of the improvements we have to look forward to this season…

Mountain Creek, NJ – This summer Creek’s been constructing their new 55,000 sq-ft base lodge, set to open in December. The mountain will also be seeing a few other additions in a larger 30 lane tubing center, a slopeside restaurant, new beginner terrain, and a Mountain Coaster (yes, a winter rollercoaster that winds down the mountain).
Big Sky, MT – The “Biggest Skiing in America” just got bigger with the addition of 5 gladed trails. These new runs cover more than 20 acres combined and can be accessed from the Ramcharger Chairlift. Big Sky now offers a whopping 5,532 acres of skiable terrain overall.

Killington, VT – The “Beast of the East” has invested around $7M in resort improvements for this coming season. Tearing down & rebuilding the Peak Lodge will make it the largest gondola-served venue in the East. Building a tubing park, installing energy-efficient snow guns, expanding the Wobbly Barn, updating their rental equipment, and adding 4 new groomers to their fleet are also included in their plans for 2011-12.

Mount Snow, VT – Last March the resort issued a press release announcing lift improvements for this winter. In place of their current triple chairlift, a 6-passenger Leitner Poma “bubble” lift will carry riders from base to summit in 7 minutes while shielding them from wind & the elements.

Squaw Valley, CA – This week the Lake Tahoe resort detailed their 5-year capital improvement plan. The $50M project will cover everything from food served in their lodges to clearing new trails. Each year they’ll be making improvements to the overall visitor experience including a ski-up coffee shop and interactive resort information boards.
